Original daily Viennese newspaper from the post-World War I period with almost forgotten contributions by Friedrich von Wieser (1851-1926) and Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973). Von Wieser was a Professor of Economics at the University of Vienna and is commonly referred to as the “first generation” of Austrian Economists. His student was economist von Mises.

This newspaper includes a three-column contribution by von Wieser entitled “Die Schuld am Frieden” [”The Fault of Peace”]. The article (which is part 1 with a second part to appear in the next day’s paper) is critical of the Treaty of Versailles, describing it as too restrictive on Germany and Austria. He also states that the consequence of restrictive peace may not be known for another 50 years – poignant words, that with the benefit of historical hindsight are exactly on point.

The second article “Die Wiedereinführung des börsenmässigen Valutahandels” [”The Reintroduction of a Stock Exchange for Foreign Currency”] is a two-column article by von Mises. In it he describes the complications facing importers and exporters in a post-war environment. When currencies are historically plagued by war induced uncertainties how can one protect against currency fluctuations in the international marketplace? The marketplace solved this by forcing companies into contracts based on foreign currencies and von Mises was looking for solution that would benefit Austria.
