Description

[Berlin]: Volksdeutsche Mittelstelle, [1940]. 210 by 150mm (8¼ by 6 inches). Original wrappers; 56 pp. In German. Together with instructions for forced train transport: “Anweisungen für den Bahntransportführer” 7 pp. With three full-page maps. Very good with old water stains to the top of the cover and first few pages.

On offer is a very scarce military instruction booklet with maps, statistics, and detailed orders and instructions for the forced movement by the Nazis of Germans living in Romania and Bulgaria to Poland as part of Hitler’s plans to occupy eastern Poland.

In 1840 Germans moved to Bukovina and Bobrudzha. By 1940 there were 80,000 Germans living as a minority population in Romania and Bulgaria. They became pawns in Hitler’s efforts to expand Germany eastward. These same Germans were again forced to move in 1945 when at the Potsdam Conference and as a resolution to World War II the Germans living in Poland had to move west. Thus, the ethnic Germans of Romania and Bulgaria were twice faced with personal tragedy—first in 1940 when they were uprooted from their homes and brought to Poland and again in 1945 when they were forced to move to within the borders of present day Germany.
