Vienna: Der Luftschutzwart (but actually anonymous), [1944–1945]. Single A4 page type written. Paper watermarked “Leykam Harbpost 1935”. In German.

Excellent example of Galgenhumor (i.e. gallows humor) during Allied bombing runs of Vienna. The city was bombed 51 times between 1944 and 1945; 37,000 houses destroyed and over 3,000 bomb craters were counted.

This original type written page is a humorous take on a “party invitation”. Admission is free! When does it start? Listed for the sirens. Where is it? In the bunkers. Note, in the event of travel complications by our London based compatriots, then the party unfortunately won’t take place—unless of course, there is a last minute substitution by the Yanks. Remember, bring your gas mask to this party and ladies may keep curlers in their hair.
