Description

Utting, Germany: Buddhistisches Haus Georg Grimm, 1967. 205 by 145mm (8 by 5¾ inches). Paper wrappers; [2], 194 pp. Very good to near fine.

Scarce German Buddhist publication with a decidedly Schopenhauer twist edited by Maya Keller-Grimm and Max Hoppe. Publication was funded by the estate of Georg Grimm (1868–1945), a former Catholic judge who established one of Germany’s first Buddhist organization in 1921.

Keller-Grimm, Maya (née Rosa Grimm). 1899/1900 — 1990. Daughter of famous German buddhist Georg Grimm. Later, continuing her father’s work as editor of Yāna.

Hoppe, Max (Anagārika Dharmapāla). 24.4.1907 — 1992. Theology student who became interested in Schopenhauer, then in 1936 in Grimm’s Buddhism. Joined the Altbuddhistische Gemeinde and became Grimm’s pupil. After the war settled down in Utting and soon became leader of the Altbuddhistische Gemeinde, together with Maya Keller-Grimm.

Although Yāna is found at 23 universities in the United States, the holdings are disparate and disjointed. We were not able to locate a US based holding of these issues from 1967. US holdings appear to commence with the issues published in 1970.

See, Culture Contact and Valuation: Early German Buddhists and the Creation of a ‘Buddhism in Protestant Shape’ by Martin Baumann. Numen, Sep. 1997, Vol. 44, No. 3 (Sep., 1997), pp. 270–295.
