Philidor, F.D. and Philip Stamma. Die Kunst im Schachspiel ein Meister zu Werden… Dritte Auflage. Schachspielgeheimnisse… [The Art of Becoming a Chess Game Master. Third Edition. (With) Chess Game Secrets]
$450
Strasburg: Amand Koenig, 1771. 170 by 110mm (6¾ by 4¼ inches). Sm. 8vo.; [24], 352 pp. Double page titlepages (verso of first leaf opposite recto of second leaf). One very nice folding table of a chessboard attached to pages 243-244. Very nicely rebacked in modern calf over marbled boards.
Very good plus. The pages are generally free of foxing; an overall very crisp and clean copy.
François-André Danican Philidor (1726-1795) was a French composer and chess player, often regarded as the best chess player of his age. A well-known chess opening, and a checkmate method are both named after him. This is the third edition in German of two of the standard chess manuals by Philidor bound with Stamma’s text on pp. 231-352. The book describes in detail numerous gambits and sample chess plays. Scarce, especially in such a nice condition.
