With the establishment of the Soviet Occupation Zone the entire education system of Eastern Germany was restructured. Under the Ministry of People’s Education systematic steps were made to ensure a “new orientation” of teachers. The youth had to be educated in a politically directed manner. To that end the GDR formed Institutes for Teacher Education.
This large commemorative box of original photographs and drawings is from a celebration of 30 years East Germany at the Institute for Teacher Education, Weissenfels. The seven large mounted photographs mostly show Egon Krenz (born 1937), the later last communist leader of the GDR, who is received by the teachers as if he were a rock star. Krenz started his career as a teacher. After the fall of the Wall he was sentenced to 6 1/2 years of prison for manslaughter.
The 21 leaves of large-format artwork is by teachers and pupils and generally free of political motives. It shows a form of allowed expression and outsider art within the structures of approved GDR teacher education.
