Description

[Raila (Gera), East Germany]: Pionierzeltlager Mitschurin, 1968. 270 by 240mm (10¾ by 9½ inches). Spiral bound photo album; [18] lvs with tissue guards. 28 original silver gelatin photographs sized 110 × 175 mm. Neatly labeled throughout in German. One photo missing. Along with a small triangular commemorative flag. Very good plus.

This album is from a central Young Pioneer camp south of Leipzig (Raila near Gera). The Young Pioneers was an East German youth organization for children ages 6–13. Loosely based on Scouting, but organized in such a way as to indoctrinate schoolchildren with socialist ideology and prepare them for the Free German Youth (the official youth movement for 14 to 25 year olds). This camp was quite large with a capacity of 800 children. The structures were all demolished between 2002-2004 and the property “returned to nature”. In the words of someone we know who attended this very camp: “Nothing compares to how wonderful it was to be a youth in East Germany.”

The album is very interesting because on the one side it shows fun activities such as singing, hiking, and hanging out in the dormitories; and on the other side we have wonderful photographs of a demonstration of how illegal border crossers should be subdued, how to use gas masks, and fire department assistance.

A nice insight into East German youth culture.
