The First Democratic Prime Minister of Portugal

João Pinheiro Chagas (1863–1925) was the first democratic Prime Minister of Portugal. During his political career, both as Prime Minister and diplomat, Minister Chagas assembled this unique collection of pamphlets. Among these are handwritten notes from Chagas, along with inscriptions to him. An important historical record from the founding period of the Portuguese democracy. 

This sammelband contains exceedingly rare, and mostly non-recorded pamphlets. In general, the publications are political and from the last years of the Portuguese Monarchy and the beginning of the First Portuguese Republic. An (unrecorded?) pamphlet written by Prime Minister José de Castro ​“O Maior Crime do Regimen” is inscribed to his friend Chagas (​“A João Chagas o terrível panfletário…”). Of especial importance are the notations and markings of Chagas, many of which are found in the pamphlet on Prime Minister João Franco by P. Senna Freitas, that he ends with the notation ​“Basta de asneiras” [Done with this screw-up!]. 

Oddly, the first bound-in pamphlet has nothing to do with politics, but rather Halley’s comet, which in 1910 passed Earth especially close and was eagerly anticipated. (This pamphlet also unrecorded?). Chagas: Prime Minister and astrophile! 

Format 1 volume of 23 individual pamphlets bound together; 10″ x 6.5″ (25 x 16 cm). Approximately 575 pages

Condition Paper in good (at times barely good) condition; some parts with foxing. Spine professionally repaired and front cover reattached to text block with cloth. Paper boards with strong wear to edges.

Published Most published in Portugal or Brazil; between 1891 and 1915 (most between 1909 and 1911).
