Description

New York: Julian Messner, Inc., 1953. 215 by 145 mm (8½ by 5¾ inches). Original cloth boards; [6], 367 pp. Inscribed by Feuchtwanger to his literary agent in German: “Felix Guggenheim, a friend, a connoisseur, Lion Feuchtwanger. April 53.” (trans.) Very good.

Lion Feuchtwanger (1884–1958) was a German Jewish novelist and playwright best known for his work Jud Süß. This book is the story of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the exalted, visionary, often ridiculous, little man whose heights of philosophical grandeur were equaled only by the degrading absurdity of his private life. It is also the story of Rousseau’s effortlessly adulterous wife.

Provenance: Collection of Felix Guggenheim (1904–1976).
