The artist Thomas Theodor Heine (1867–1948) was a German illustrator best known for his work in Simplicissimus. Thomas Mann (1875–1955) originally wrote the story in 1906, but due to controversy publication was halted and it was first published with this edition in 1921. The book remains Mann’s most controversial book for its portrayal of antisemitism and incest among twins.
