Description

Stuttgart: Mundus-Verlag, 1953. 210 by 145 mm (8¼ by 5¾ inches). Original blue cloth boards; 534, [2] pp. With a frontispiece of Heinkel and numerous plates of photo-illustration throughout. Fourth edition. In German. Inscribed by Heinkel in German: “Mr. Felix Guggenheim. With best wishes. 20. March 1957. Ernst Heinkel.” (trans.) Very good.

This is the massive biography of Ernst Heinkel (1888–1958), German aircraft designer and manufacturer and in leadership positions of the Nazi party. His namesake aircraft, the “Heinkel He 178” was the world’s first turbojet powered aircraft, and the “Heinkel He 176” was the world’s first rocket powered aircraft. This is an unusual association copy, as it’s inscribed by Heinkel—who for many years was a Nazi—to the Los Angeles based German American publisher and literary editor Felix Guggenheim (1904–1976), who was Jewish.
